Is TikTok Coming Back to India? Here’s What You Need to Know (Image Source: Social Media)
Fans of TikTok in India might get a chance to use the app again, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet. The popular short-video platform, owned by a Chinese company, was banned in India in 2020 along with 58 other Chinese apps. The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cited concerns over data privacy and national security when it blocked the apps, leaving over 200 million active Indian users without access to one of their favourite social media platforms.
Recently, Times Now Tech found that TikTok’s official website was accessible on both mobile devices and laptops. However, some users on X (formerly Twitter) said they still couldn’t open the website, suggesting that it might be available only in limited areas or being tested in phases. Despite the website being live, the app itself is still not available on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store in India. So, the website going live doesn’t mean the app has officially returned.
Another reason for the renewed buzz is the improving ties between India and China. Earlier this week, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited India and met Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. During these discussions, Jaishankar mentioned the importance of a “candid and constructive” approach to bilateral relations. Additionally, PM Modi is scheduled to visit China later this month for the SCO Summit. These diplomatic developments hint that India-China relations might be easing, which could create a chance for Chinese apps like TikTok to come back to India.
Even though TikTok’s website being live has sparked excitement, there has been no official statement from the Indian government or TikTok about its return. The ban is still in place, and the app cannot operate in India without regulatory approval. For now, Indian users will have to wait. The chances of TikTok returning seem higher than before, but until an official decision is made, its comeback remains uncertain.
